Faith Over Fear: Trusting God with Your Finances
Over 60% of Americans report that money is a major source of stress. But what if true financial peace isn’t found in having more, but in trusting more? Jesus, fully aware that money would be a central concern for many of His followers, spoke frequently and directly about it. By exploring His words and promises of provision, we can begin to reposition our hearts to trust God in a way that allows us to experience the peace He died to give us.
God’s Promises for Daily Provision
Throughout the Bible, God’s perspective on money is remarkably consistent– do not worry.
In the Old Testament, God made manna rain from the sky each day the Israelites journeyed through the desert. There was always more than enough to feed everyone.
God instructed the Israelites not to take more than they needed for the day, because He wanted them to trust that He would provide for what they needed, precisely when they needed it. Still, some disobeyed and gathered extra, and the surplus spoiled.
At some point in our lives, we have all experienced the same state of heart as these Israelites. We have had more than what we needed to survive the day, and yet we let the worry of what we might not have tomorrow spoil what God meant for us to enjoy that day.
In the New Testament, in the very prayer Jesus taught us, He says – give us this day our daily bread. He did not say our yearly bread, He didn’t even say our monthly bread, Jesus used the word daily to teach us that God would take care of our concerns one day at a time.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with creating long term plans for our finances, but we must be careful not to obsess over having today what we will yet need months or years from now. We must guard our hearts from worrying about concerns that will not be the end of us if we do not have them today.
The Unfailing Character of God as Provider
Another truth we can anchor our hearts on is Philippians 4:19: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.” God is the richest being. He owns everything—money, food, homes, medicine, and clothing. He decides who to give it to and when. There is no need to worry when He who owns all, has promised to give us what we need, when we need it. And He who has promised has proven time and time again to be faithful.
As we meditate on this, it is important to consider the teaching of Psalm 84:11 that tells us, “No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” The things we do not have today, we do not have, only because God says it would not be good for us to have today. We do not need to know Why, all we need to know is the Who behind this decree, and we can have peace knowing that the way things are today is for the best. However, this same verse assures us that as long as we continue to walk faithfully with the Lord, He will provide what He deems best for us.
In addition to this, Romans 8:32 says “He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?” Jesus is the most precious treasure in all creation, and yet God did not withhold giving us Jesus no matter the cost to Him. He promised His people salvation and salvation can only come through Jesus’s blood, and God provided and fulfilled His promise.
These revelations of God’s character as provider assure us that we can trust God to give us food, water, shelter, and payments for tuition, cars, houses, and utilities. That God gave us Jesus as He promised – there is no reason to believe that He will not come through for our needs. Though meeting everything from bills to tuition can seem daunting to us, these are in truth, very easy for God to provide.
Overcoming the Temptation to Worry about Finances
One of the most comforting passages we can cling to is Matthew 6:25–27: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life... Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them... Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”
While making money is a concern for the entire human race, let us not forget to look at the other side of creation, animals and the different flora and fauna – none of them work for money and yet they are all taken care of by God. In fact there are trees that have outlived humans. They’ve never toiled or earned, yet they thrive under God’s care.
Many times we ruminate on the more we can do to improve our financial state, and yet we forget that most of creation does not work for anything. Everything simply lives and is sustained out of the will and love of God. When we are tempted to worry about where to find money for payments, remember the many birds in the sky – none of them lacking in anything, simply because God is good.
The Decision We All Have to Make
In Deuteronomy 30:19, God says, “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life...” Each day, we have a decision to make.. We can choose to fret about our finances and let it steal the joy God meant for us to have today, or we can choose to rest in God and His promises for provision. The fruit of trusting God is peace, joy, and recognizing the abundance of blessings in our lives today, blessings today that might not be there tomorrow.
Moving in the Right Direction
I encourage you to join me in choosing to rest in God’s promises for provision, that we may enjoy the life Jesus died to give us, regardless of our financial circumstances. For those who do not have Jesus in their lives, financial predicaments are burdensome, but for those who have Jesus in their lives, financial setbacks are simply opportunities for God to show up, and to enjoy His presence and His blessings, as we wait for His next move to bring us what we need.
Next time you check your bank account and feel fear rising, pause and pray aloud: “Give us today our daily bread.” Invite God into that moment of anxiety. Repeat this daily. Trust grows with practice.
